Bakgrund

I am born and raised in the U.S. where I received degrees from Syracuse University and the University of South Florida. My background is varied and includes policy studies and communication, as well as music performance. In 1997 I received my Ph.D. in educational research and measurement with a focus on organisational and leadership development. In 2001 I joined the faculty at Mid Sweden University focusing on school and leadership development.
Since 1993 my work has included both research about leadership development as well as participation in leadership development training programs, nationally (USA) and internationally. Among other things I have collaborated on the development of a theory of leadership generated from 10 years of research that is based on chaos and complexity theory and resulted in a book: Living on the edge of chaos: leading schools into the global age (Snyder, Acker-Hocevar, Snyder, 2000). In more recent years I have studied the role of technology in society and the impact it has on human communication and learning. In particular I am interested in the development of social networks and social cultures through e-communication as they relate to meaning making and learning. With a background in quality management, I have also been involved in the development of two benchmarking systems for leadership and school development.

Aktuell verksamhet

Den öppna och medvetna skolan is a nationally funded project to develop schools of diversity in Sweden. The primary focus is on school development processes based on communication, work culture, systems thinking, and multiple languages to foster the diverse culture within the school to meet school goals and national standards. In this project we work with storytelling, action learning and cultural analysis to help develop schools as well as conduct research. The focus of the research is to examine the ways in which schools work with diversity and integrate it into a broader context of school development and to give voice to educators, students and parents.

Global Citizen: what does it mean for schools and for new social roles in the 21st century
In this exploratory study we are interested in examining the concept of the global citizen to problematize the concept in relation to school development. Of interest is to understand how the concept is used in the school to inform pedagogical development. For example, do schools have pen pals across nations or are students engaged in cross-cultural learning communities for working together to problem solve contemporary social problems across national borders? Specifically, we are interested in exploring what is a global citizen for educators and students? To what extent are the perspectives and definitions similar and different across nations? In what ways are schools working with the concept of the global citizen to inform the schools pedagogical and curriculum development? And finally, what are the new social roles that are emerging in the 21st century with the global citizen?

Digital Culture Inventory
The purpose of this inventory is to help individuals examine how they use technology and how they communicate with technology that contributes to the development of a culture. In focus are basic technological competencies, as well as communication styles, learning styles, human dynamics, and culture dynamics. This inventory is currently under development and is an extension of the theoretical model that was developed earlier.

The Digital Culture as Peda-Socio Transformation
The digital culture model is a theoretical representation that emerged from five years of research about online educational leadership and school development in an international context. The model reflects the ways in which the virtual worlds of online communication have become part of our physical work and learning spaces, blurring and in some cases dissolving the line between virtual and reality. The model is conceptually framed using cultural theory, communication theory and sensemaking theory suggesting that the role of technology as actor in human communication today gives rise to new cultural symbols, norms, behaviours and values, which also impact knowledge development and sensemaking. The intent of the model is to raise awareness among educators about the need to integrate technology, pedagogy, communication, and organizational systems to develop learning environments that prepares youth for 21st century work and living.

Digital School Cultures for Teaching and Learning – 21st Century Competences.
The purpose of this proposed study is to investigate the ways in which the use of ICT has developed in Swedish schools and how it has contributed to the formation of new competencies and skills that relate to 21st century learning through changes in teaching and learning strategies. Of interest is to examine the ways in which educational programming initiatives have contributed to a change in schools, as well as to identify those digital competencies that are most needed for teaching and learning in the 21st century. It is anticipated that the long-term development in Swedish schools regarding ICT can provide an appropriate context in which to examine more closely the kinds of competencies for teaching and learning that are most critical to support 21st century learning. Outcomes of the study are intended to inform future development related to ICT in education, as well as pedagogical development in a digital society building on the emerging need for digital literacy.
